Poker Bots vs. Humans, Round 2: Early Game Strategy
The early blind levels of a sit & go tournament are the most complex in terms of game theory, but meanwhile the least significant concerning prize pool equity. When beginners ask me what they should be doing early on, I start by telling them one thing: survive! Staying alive is what allows you to progress to the most-profitable high blind levels of the sit & go. But there has to be more to it than that, right? True. While survival is the underlying fundamental objective, there are undoubtedly some profitable opportunities that arise early on - especially at the lower stakes. Big pocket pair all-ins and set mining, for example, can provide you with a chance to double up early on. In addition to this, the weakest players at the table are going to be giving away the majority of their chips during this time. Being able to notice the holes in their play and consequently take their stacks is an easy way to secure a shot at the money. On a practical level, humans are able to do this with much greater ease than poker bots. It takes creativity to bust players early on; the variables and unpredictable play of rookies is something that, on a practical level, human players have a greater 'understanding' of.
